Are They Goals or Just Dreams
January 3rd, 2009Having a Dream is wonderful as is having a Goal.
Goals can be useful, or a burden, depending on where you are in your personal growth. I have both “Goals” and “Dreams” as do most Entrepreneurs, I make sure my “Goals” are attainable.
I make my “Goal-List” every New Years, some people call them resolutions. I’m not good at keeping resolutons - “Goals” are another story.
Goal-lists can be very important for people who have a problem with time management. My life is very busy, is yours? Time has a way of getting away from me, how about you?
I’ve heard it said “A dream is a goal without legs“ . It’s a wonderful thing to have, and can be the guiding passion of your life, but unless you clarify it and give it the legs, getting there is going to be very much a matter of luck.
To change a dream into an obtainable goal you should write it out, give it details, make it clear enough that you can actually see it, feel it, know what you will feel like when you attain it.
There are many ways this can work for you
*It clarifies what you want to the point that you will always be aware of anything that is related to it so opportunities will not pass by unnoticed.
*It shows you what you need to do to get there, step by step action.
*It keeps you focused, makes detours and dead ends less likely to distract you.
*And with the images always fresh in your mind and heart you will have a broader insight for achieving it. The clearer and more vivid the image, the more likely to happen.
What is a Dream?
To me its when you visualize something awesome you’d like to attain but when someone asks you to tell them more, you can’t. You don’t know details. All you know is that you want to attain it.
This is a dream. It’s not a goal. Because it is not specific. There is a saying, “be careful what you pray for, because you will surely get it, but not necessarily in the form, and at the time, that you expected.”
If your looking for a new business venture, ask yourself the right questions….What sort of work do you want to be doing? Do you like people? Do you like animals? What kind of animals? (There’s a big difference between working with a friendly kitty-cat and working with large wild animals who would prefer that you not be anywhere near him)
Do you enjoy structure or freedom? And be careful of this one, because we all think we want freedom until we find ourselves working alone and without guidelines or supervision. For some people this works fine, for others it is far more threatening than they had realized.
For every image that comes to you, follow it, ask yourself how it fits, how it will work for you, and what comes next.
Know in your heart that this is what you want to be doing with your life, that it’s a job or a business you will enjoy so much that you’d love to do it even if you didn’t have to earn a living. Then put THAT image out there for attainment. This way there will be fewer mistakes.
When I write “Put it out there for attainment” I am not saying that you then sit back and wait. The best advise I’ve heard is “Pray as if it all depends on God, and then work as if it all depends on you.”
With your mental picture in place, you know what it is that you are working toward, but don’t limit the way in which you and your goal can come together.
There are more paths to your goal than you can imagine. It’s important to choose one that you will work on, with a couple of fall-backs in case of obstacles, but be careful to remain clear that these are not the only alternatives.
Talk to ya later,
Pat
ps: I finished taking down my house decorations, but when I went to post I found I missed an entire room…..my blog site! So I put it on my “Goal-list”

In the past few months I have found myself worrying about my bank account, my savings, my mortgage, my business… My mind has been filled with thoughts about unemployment, repossessions, stock markets plummeting, banks going bust… I began to wonder… can this get any worse?
